Food Companies Promise "Healthy" Ad Campaigns
By Stefanie Hamilton
Last year, several of Canada's largest food and drink companies signed on to the Children's Advertising Initiative, promising only to advertise healthier products to children. Recently, the companies released more details about their advertising plans.
"These are the companies that sell potato chips, chocolate bars, burgers, fries, soft drinks and other junk food, and they often take the blame for Canada's rising childhood obesity rates. This latest initiative is another demonstration of how committed they are to fostering healthy lifestyles among children, says Diana Carradine, executive director of Concerned Children's Advertisers."
Several companies, like Cadbury, Coca-Cola, and Hershey have all said they will no longer advertise directly to children under 12 years old. Others, like Campbell, McDonald's, and Nestle have said they will only promote health products. Source: Canwest News Service
