Overweight People Respond Differently to Food Cues than Thin People Do

Overweight people respond differently to food cues than thin people do, according to a new study from the Miriam Hospital in Providence, RI.

“Obese people are not as sensitive to those feelings of fullness and as a result, they continue to eat longer,” said Dr. Dale Bond, author of the study.

Dr. Bond and his colleagues compared the differences in salivation of 34 obese people with that of 18 people of normal weight. The overweight people continued to salivate longer as a response to new tastes than did people of normal weight.

“This study is basically saying that there is a difference in how we respond to food physiologically depending on our weight status,” said Dr. Bond. “It suggests that this process is impaired in people who are obese.”

The study appeared in the journal Obesity.
