Scientists Isolate Proteins That may Regulate Body's Metabolic Cycles
By Jane St. Clair
Researchers at the University of California, Irvine, isolated a protein that regulates the body's circadian rhythms. The protein works with another protein that regulates metabolism.
The work has "far reaching implications for human illness," said Dr. Paolo Sassone-Corsi, lead research scientist.
It has long been recognized that lack of sleep or disruption to sleep causes people to grow hungry, which in turn leads to obesity and an acceleration of the aging process. By discovering the chemical basis of the body's ability to regulate itself during its 24-hour cycle, scientists are hoping to find medications to treat obesity.
