Sleep Disorders in Children Linked to ADHD and Weight Problems

Children with sleep disorders are more likely to have behavioral problems such as hyperactivity and anxiety, according to a new study from Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Rhode Island.

Dr. Judith Owens and her colleagues studied 230 children aged 3 to 18 with sleep-disordered breathing and found that 47 percent have behavioral problems and 23 percent have Attention Deficit Disorder/Hyperactivity. About half of the 230 children are also overweight, and this group was even more likely to have behavioral issues.

This study appears in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine.
