Vitamin D Levels Predict Weight Loss Success
By Jane St. Clair
A study from the University of Minnesota found that people on low-calorie diets lose more weight if their Vitamin D levels are high at the start of their new regimen.
- Dr. Shalamar Sibley and her colleagues measured Vitamin D levels of 38 men and women at the beginning of an 11-week, low-calorie diet.
- Higher levels of Vitamin D at the onset of the diet predicted weight loss in a linear mathematical relationship.
- The study subjects not only lost more weight, but also more abdominal fat.
"Vitamin D deficiency is associated with obesity, but it is not clear if inadequate Vitamin D causes obesity or the other way around," Dr. Sibley said.
This study was presented in Washington, D.C., during the 91st annual meeting of The Endocrine Society.
