I'm still working on losing weight but I'd really like some tips on how to stay motivated to keep it off - I've lost weight over and over and over and always gain it back.

I consider it a victory just not to gain weight. I was in Weight Watchers for a while, and I only lost a quarter pound a month or so, even though others in the groups were losing 4 and 5 pounds a week. It was so discouraging, but the leader kept saying it was good progress.
I was reading that losing weight is as hard as Olympic level sports training. I believe it!

I know this sounds really cliche, but the thing I keep hearing from personal trainers and my friends who are really healthy is that my focus should be less on losing weight and more on creating a healthy lifestyle. It makes sense. I mean, if my only focus is trying to lose weight, then once I've lost the weight I want to lose, I'm more likely to stop doing the things that caused me to lose weight. But, if my focus is to be healthy, it seems more likely to cause me to take a more holistic approach and make permanent changes in the way I eat, exercise, etc. Plus, then I'm focusing on something positive (becoming healthier), as opposed to something negative (losing unwanted pounds) which helps my overall mentality and attitude.
I don't know if any of that helps....

You are the wise woman, but I am not there yet. I would diet in high school to get into a prom dress, and I'm still that way. It's all about looking good and wearing a little bitty size. You are changing my thinking and what's more I have a pedometer! Way to go! Gen

haha.. I don't know about wise. I think part of the reason I've taken that approach is because I won't ever be an "itty-bitty" size. If I get down to a size 8, that will be a healthy size and weight for me. My body isn't made to be a size 2, or 4. The only way I could get down to a size like that is if I took on totally unhealthy habits, like not eating.
That's where I take such issue with the media and fashion industry. They've set this standard that's totally unrealistic and made women think that they're only beautiful if they can fit into a size 2.

Feeling kind of sick - I always crave salty things like chips when I'm sick. Why is that? It drives me nuts!

It's perfectly normal to crave chips when you are sick. It's nature's way.
I know what you mean about celebrity and fashion magazines. Talk about morale killers. These women are practically transperant, they are so thin. From the side they look like paper dolls. I am thinking of women like Nicole Ritchie, Paris Hilton, Angelina Jolie, etc. They set an impossible standard.
Real women have curves!

I've lost over a hundred pounds and kept it off for almost 5 years now..it's a yo yo sometimes with 5 pounds about but when I'm at the lower end of the five pounds it's great but at the higher end it feels horrible and I feel like my stomach is all bloated. Getting off some of the pounds is so stubborn it's frustrating. All I have to say is it's never ending and while that might sound depressing it really should't be, being healthy and happy and aware of what your doing to your body is a knowledge I will carry with me for the rest of my life, regardless of when and if I have kids I'll know that being active will get me back down in weight and just staying active will help me feel good. My dad gave me advice when I first started losing weight and I still carry it with me, he said that while I might hate the gym and working out now it soon will become a habit and if I break that habit I will not feel like myself. So ultimately when I don't work out or do something I feel kind of gross so while it might be slow beginnings go for a walk or something it will make you feel better.

That's great advice, Trish, and so true!! Now that I've finally joined a good gym and gotten into a routine of running on the treadmill or working out, I actually get a little cranky on days when I skip my workout. It's pretty amazing how much exercise affects my mood. I'm glad though... it must mean I'm doing something right
congrats on the weight loss! That's amazing! And I think you're right... I think weight fluctuations are a part of life... especially for women. It's not bad. Just part of how we're built.

Hey guys thank you, it was difficult but can be done. First off you have to make a effort to not eat as much food and be mindful of what your putting in there. My down fault is I'm pig headed about my workouts I think about how they work into my day and how I can work around other plans. I have been doing this for a long time so you don't have to get as crazy as I get but the people who say they don't have time to work out there is time you just have to make it or find it. For example I had a game to attend at night and it wasn't over till after 10 and I knew after the game I would be tired so for that day I dragged myself out of bed at 6 to work out before work. It's not an everyday thing but I have to do it to get my workout in. You kind of have to put yourself first when it comes to fitness and eating because only you know what's right. The way I started all of this weight loss is by completely engrossing my self in exercise and healthy living at Wellspring New York camp in '04 otherwise I mean I wouldn't think it possible for me to eat that little and exercise and survive hahaha but it was. My former self was a shell of what I can become, granted a much bigger shell but not who I am. Let me know if you need anything.

Trish, you have really accomplished a lot and I feel very inspired by your example. Can you please tell me what your work-outs are like? I am now going to a gym and all the various machines confuse me. Which ones do you use? Do you lift weights? Do you take classes? I really think you know what you are doing! Thanks!

Hey Gen,
Well thanks for the compliments it took a little while for me to feel comfortable in the gym but now I don't care who is there I just do my own thing and I enjoy people watching it helps me get through when my music isn't cutting it. I hired a trainer for a while because I was getting bored with my workouts and she gave me some tips as well. So first off make friends with the people that work at the gym they usually know what they are doing otherwise they wouldn't have a job at the gym and the trainers are pretty friendly and are paid to help you out. For my workouts I'm a big fan of interval training. So what I do is I warm up for two mins and then start it up...start slow though but I'll give you my example first...so for the eliptical I start at a level 5 then slowly put it to 7 and my two interval levels are between 12 and 13 and then crank it to 16,17. When the intervals are at the hardest I just say to myself it's only for one min I can do it then before you know it, it is done and i'm back to 12. Interval training is so great because it doesn't let your heart settle I'm good with the running for a half an hour but your body settles in a rhythm but with intervals your burning more calories and getting more out of your cardio.
For weights as of a few months ago I became a big fan of pilates it strenghts and tones me better than free weights, I did free weights for a long time and still do them but pilates is about control and resistance and I have found better results with pilates than free weights but I always like doing weights in general and doing weights through out my weight loss has helped me stay tone and not saggy so yes do weights it will help I can't stress it enough and muscle burns more calories than fat. Hopefully that helps and just let me know what else I can do to help. Keep up the hard work!

Oh I also like the stair machine and treadmill I get bored you know so I do intervals for all that and my hard interval is 5 levels up from my easy one. For example if my easy interval is five my hard one is 10 and each interval is for one minute it will help the workout go faster. Once it starts getting too easy up each one by one so 6 and 11 and so on. Warm up though for two mins.

Okay, you have totally inspired me! I have been doing weight machines and treadmills but I never have pushed the levels up on the treadmill. But you are right, I can do it for one minute. That can be done. I have never tried pilates. I went to one yoga class at our gym and I could not do anything, meanwhile, the instructor was twisted into a pretzel. I felt that they were making yoga into a real competitive thing and there were guys in the class. What do you do in pilates?

Hey Gen,
The teacher might of sucked at yoga but for every yoga position there is a beginning stage and the teacher should of told you that if your not able to do something so that is upsetting...hopefully you don't give up on yoga because it is great stretch for your muscles. Pilates is kind of similiar to yoga but different if that makes sense. What you do in pilates that is similiar to yoga is you have to breath through things because it will get hard and to not lose the exercise but just breath...for instance there are these things called 100s and you do 100 beats of something like staying in a crunch position and beating your arms till you reach a hundred. Pilates strenths, tones and conditions. It was created by a man during world war II as a way to exercise (just a tid bit of information I have picked up) it was then carried through by dancers particularily ballet because the way you move is in sequences and once you get better the moves are suppose to flow together...it takes a lot of practice but well worth it. Let me know if you need anything else.

It's just the opposite in Arizona! When it gets hot, we have to stay inside like you do in winter. But we go swimming a lot. How are you doing, Trish? Give me more hints for weight loss.

Sorry Gen it's been crazy here in California lately,
Tips hmmmm
Ok I'm a sucker for crackers and the Club crackers reduced fat are great but they still have enough calories and fat to moniter it so I use it as a splurge and I know this is wasteful but I still have problems not over eating so my friends know this and they don't look at me weird but when I buy things usually all things healthy or not I throw away half right away...I live in an apartment so if your like that or have a house instead of throwing things out put everything in ziploc baggies with fat and calories written on the outside so its easy to monitor. It is a little tedious but if you dedicate a little time after grocery shopping it will be alot easier. That's a huge one because weight controllers and everyone in general do not realize the serving size and 95% of the time will overeat and underestimate the calories they have. If you work at a desk every 30 mins get up and stretch and take a walk during lunch break. When you go out to eat try to plan ahead what your having and be specific a lot of the time I will moniter before I go in so everything is all set...if there is a slip up I try not to go in a downward spiral there is always a new day and it's ongoing so don't get discouraged.
