HELP! It's Thanksgiving. It's gravy. It's mashed potatoes. It's pumpkin pie with whipped cream. It's time to gain another 20 pounds and be unthankful all year. HELP, please.

I know what you mean. The holidays can be rough when you're trying to lose weight or even maintain a healthy weight?
Do you track your calories at all? It helps me control my portions better, even during Thanksgiving and Christmas. I may have a few extra calories (wrapped up in a piece of pie or an extra helping of mashed potatoes), but I try to either balance it out by working out for a few extra minutes or just allow myself the extra calories 'cause, after all.. it's the holidays.

But either way, if you know how many calories you should consume in a day, and are able to keep track of how many you actually eat, it helps tremendously.

I do the design-your-plate thing, where you put one-third protein, two-thirds veggies and fruits and so your plate looks like that. But it does not work because I pile the plate up too much. I think it's supposed to be just one layer, not layer on layer.

How can you count calories accurately unless you measure everything in a measuring cup or weigh your portions? If you eyeball it, you eat too much, right?

Today I read in the paper that eight ounces of turkey has about 300 calories and takes an hour of basketball to burn off; a cup of stuffing has 180 calories and takes a half hour of walking; even a half cup of carrots takes ten minutes of Frisbee to burn up. So altogether Thanksgiving is 2,127 calories and takes five hours and forty minutes of vigorous exercise to balance it out. I don't honestly think I could do all that Frisbee and basketball.

I try to do a 5k or 10k run or walk Thanksgiving morning - then I've started the day by burning off some calories and I tend to eat healthier on the days I exercise.

That's a good idea - to start the day with exercise. I'll try it. The problem is Thanksgiving turkey makes you so sleepy that you just don't want to do anything after dinner but sleep. Happy Thanksgiving to LS and STEPH, my diet buddies. You're inspiring -G.

OH I wish I would have read this yesterday morning!
What a great idea to walk or run Thanksgiving morning!
Here's my overall philosophy about Thanksgiving.... it's just one day out the year. Ya know? I'm sure I ate too much on Thanksgiving, but I tried to balance it out by adding an extra day of exercise: instead of run/walking four days this week, I did it five days.
And again... it's just one day. Healthy living - exercise, weight loss, eating right - is a lifelong thing. We're all going to have those days when we "blow it", but if our overall pattern is to eat well, exercise and keep ourselves at (or headed to) a healthy weight, then I think we're doing just fine.
One day of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie isn't going to derail our efforts.

Well, you sound as if you have a happy metabolism. I can diet and count calories and such and then blow it on Thanksgiving or during the Christmas season and gain a lot of weight that becomes IMPOSSIBLE TO TAKE OFF. I mean, I just look at a pizza and it sticks to my midsection. Sometimes I think the only one who understands is Oprah. It's jsut a struggle. I've tried Weight Watchers and so all kinds of diets.

Have you ever talked w/a doctor about it? I have a friend in California who has a thyroid condition that makes losing weight much harder for her. She had to have a doctor help her figure out what was going to work best.
I also have a friend here in Michigan who has a gluten allergy. I know.... strange... but it causes her to retain water, especially around her midsection. Again, she met with a doctor to get some help figuring out how to lose weight without compromising her health.

Your right thanksgiving is only one day but a wide open statement can lead to a downfall such as I'll have this stuff today and be better tomorrow. Then tomorrow roles around with exceptions to follow like "one piece of pie isn't that bad" and then the next day and the next. I totally agree to your saying it's only one day but some people are very all or nothing...going in whole hog as some say so if your like that don't make exceptions for yourself and hold yourself acountable. Surviving the holidays is tough but it's possible. Good luck everyone and keep moving!

I have never gone to a doctor about my weight.

Yes, Trish, I understand the all or nothing thing. I read that book, French Women Don't Get Fat, and she talks about having ONE chocolate and making it a religious experience and then that's all you eat. Me, I would go on to eat the entire bag of chocolate and then some.

It's true that some people are "all or nothing", but I also believe that moderation can be learned and that it makes life much more enjoyable because you don't have to completely cut out desserts or other things that you like. You can still enjoy them without having them "run your life" so-to-speak.

G - if you haven't been to a doctor, I highly recommend it. He or she can help you start and maintain a healthy lifestyle that will help you lose weight but ensure that you do it safely.

I lost 3 pounds over the holidays. This is a first for me. I feel so much better having been successful than I ever felt all those years I gained 10 over this time!!!

The holiday season is a time for festive gatherings with family and friends. It is also the time of year when we see tempting treats everywhere we turn.

"Weight gained during the holidays often comes from eating foods that are high in sugar and fat. The good news is that you can still enjoy these special occasions as long as you use a bit of restraint and keep yourself from indulging too much," says Joan Daniels, R.D., a dietitian at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Daniels and fellow Cancer Center dietitian Nancy Burke, R.D., offer the following tips to help you enjoy the holiday season while keeping a balanced and healthy diet.

1. Don't go hungry to a holiday event. Eat a snack or light meal before you leave. Foods high in protein, like cottage cheese, nuts or chicken help you eat less later. Fasting ahead of time, leaving room for a big meal, or planning extra trips to the buffet table often leads to overeating.

2. Fill up on fiber. Choose appetizers that will help you meet the recommended guideline of five to 10 servings of vegetables and fruits a day.

3. Eat smaller portions of food. This is especially important at a buffet, where you may want to try everything. Instead, choose the items you want to try the most, and eat a small portion of each.

4. Pace, don't race. Many times, people eat so fast that their stomachs do not have enough time to register they're full. Eat slower, savoring each bite and enjoying the taste of the food; chances are you will eat less and not overeat.

5. Limit fast food. Don't let a hectic holiday schedule force you to rely on eating fast food often. Prepare and freeze quick healthy meals ahead of time to stay out of the fast food trap.

6. Offer to bring a low-calorie dish to holiday parties. Your host will appreciate it and you will know that at least one healthy item will be on hand. Find suggestions at our recipe database, mcancer.org/recipes.

7. Be realistic. Do not try to diet during the holidays. Set a goal to maintain your present weight.

8. Watch what you drink during the holidays. Limiting the amount of alcohol you drink may help prevent a number of cancers. Regular eggnogs and other drinks made with syrups contain a high amount of calories. Try flavored, calorie-free waters, sparkling apple or grape juice, low-sodium vegetable juices or hot cider instead.

9. Physical activity: Look for ways to incorporate some daily physical activity during the holidays. Enjoy a brisk walk, either outside or at an indoor mall. Exercise can be a huge stress reliever.
