CNN News reported that Health magazine assembled a panel of nutrition experts to test 60 well-known reducing diets in order to help people decide the best ones for their New Year's resolutions to lose weight.
Here are the top 10 diets:
"The Structure House Diet" by Dr. Gerard Musante took first place with its holistic approach to dieting. Dr. Musante's plan emphasizes a person's individual relationship to food, and includes not only a diet but also exercise and motivational components.
"The Step Diet" book comes with a pedometer to encourage dieters to walk 10,000 steps per day. The diet plan is simply to cut back to 75% of what you normally eat.
Weight Watchers ranked third because the panel liked its individualized approach offered through its Core or Flex plans. Dieters can join groups in person or online, and Weight Watchers foods are available at most groceries.
"Eating Well" by Dr. Jean Harvey Berino advocates slow, steady weight loss - only 21 pounds over six months. Dr. Berino takes a holistic approach, stressing exercise, understanding what triggers overeating, and eating and shopping mindfully.
Dr. Barbara Rolls' "Volumetrics Diet" is a healthy approach that emphasizes low-density foods such as fruits, vegetables, stews, and soups that are filling but low in calories.
"The Best Life Diet" by Bob Greene is the one that helped Oprah Winfrey. This diet is not about counting carbs, fat grams, or calories but eating healthy foods in reasonable portions.
"The Solution" by Laurel Mellin defines obesity as an interaction of mind, body, and lifestyle, produced by unbalanced eating, low energy, body shame, ineffective limits, and weak self-nurturing. Again, the holistic approach got kudos from the panel of experts.
Others listed among the top 10 diets were "You on a Diet" by Drs Michael Rozien and Mehmet Oz, Dr. Connie Guttersen's "Sonoma Diet," and the "Spectrum Diet" by Dr. Dean Ornish.
