Sick of Being the ‘Fat Kid’: The Emotional Dangers of Being Overweight

Kids get picked on for all sorts of reasons, but weight tends to draw the attention of bullies more so than other personal characteristics. "The social and psychological ramifications induced by the bullying-victimization process may hinder the social development of overweight and obese youth, because adolescents are extremely reliant on peers for social support, identity and self-esteem," said obesity researchers at Queens University in Kingston, Ontario.

In their survey of Canadian youth, ages 11 to 16, the Queens University researchers found that almost 11 percent of normal-weight youth said they were victims of bullying, compared with 14 percent of overweight teens, and nearly 19 percent of obese teens. Obese girls were about twice as likely to be physically bullied than normal-weight girls.

Negative Effects that Can Last a Lifetime

Researchers have discovered that the cruel treatment associated with being overweight may have lasting, harmful effects not only on the overweight teen’s physical health but also their education, relationships, and career. Research from the University of Minnesota indicates that children who are teased about their bodies, regardless of whether they are thin or overweight, are two to three times more likely to think about or attempt suicide than children who aren't teased.

According to a report by the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children's Hospital National Poll on Children's Health, bullying is the top health concern among parents with overweight and obese children. "We found that parents with overweight or obese children actually view bullying as a greater problem than childhood obesity," Dr. Matthew M. Davis, director of the National Poll on Children's Health, said in a university news release.

Many overweight teens who have been picked on and bullied for years become stifled by their home and school environment, where there are constant reminders of their weight problem. They begin to define themselves by their weight and the negative comments they hear, which leads to depression and low self-esteem that then perpetuate their unhealthy lifestyle.
