CDC Says Obesity Rates Continue to Rise in U.S.

A study earlier this year revealed that childhood obesity rates in the United States may have peaked in the late 1990s, but a recent report by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that American adults are not following the lead of the nation's youth.
Statistics released July 17, 2008, by the CDC indicate that more than one in four American adults was obese in 2007 (a two-percent rise, from 24 to 26, over the previous year). The national trend was mirrored by increases in state obesity levels, with only five states (Kentucky, Louisiana, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia) reporting lower rates than they did the previous year.
According to the CDC, adults with a body mass index of 25.0 to 29.9 are classified as overweight, while those with BMIs of 30 or more are considered obese.
"The epidemic of adult obesity continues to rise in the United States, indicating that we need to step up our efforts at the national, state and local levels," said Dr. William Dietz of the CDC in a statement that was reported by several news organizations. "We need to encourage people to eat more fruits and vegetables, engage in more physical activity and reduce the consumption of high-calorie foods and sugar-sweetened beverages in order to maintain a healthy weight."
The U.S. government's "Healthy People 2010" objectives include an obesity rate of no more than 15 percent by the end of the decade. According to the recent CDC release, the only state with an obesity rate under 20 percent is Colorado, which checked in at 18.7 in 2007 - though the good news was at least partially offset by the revelation that Colorado's rate was actually on the rise, having increased from a low of 17.4 in 2005.
Three states - Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee - all reported obesity rates that are more than double the 15 percent goal, with Mississippi topping the chart at 31.6 percent.
