Anti-obesity Pill Linked to Five Deaths in Europe

An anti-obesity pill that was rejected by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in the United States has been linked to five deaths in Europe, where it has been permitted since 2006.
Acomplia, which is designed to affect receptors in the brain that regulate appetite, was involved in five deaths and 720 "adverse reactions," according to a report by the United Kingdom's Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency.
Also known by its generic name, rimonabant, Acomplia was turned down by the FDA in 2007 after experts claimed it increased the risk of depression and suicidal thoughts among users. One of the European deaths linked to the drug was ruled a suicide, and the MHRA cited two additional suicide attempts by Acomplia users.
A spokesman for Sanofi-Aventis, the Paris-based manufacturer of the drug, downplayed Acomplia's lethality, pointing out to the Dow Jones news organization that two of the individuals who died while taking the drug had suffered heart attacks (for which obese people are a greater risk), while one of the other deaths was the result of an infectious disease.
Sanofi-Aventis reportedly plans to re-submit the drug for approval in the United States as a treatment for type-2 diabetes.
