Curry Spice May Help Ward Off Diabetes

A common household spice used in curry dishes may help prevent diabetes, according to a new study from Columbia Medical Center. The results of the study, which has yet to be published, were presented during ENDO 2008, the annual meeting of the Endocrine Society.
Dr. Drew Tortoriello and his colleagues fed obese mice a diet rich in tumeric and found that the substance lowered inflammation in fat and liver tissues, thus reducing the risk for diabetes.
"It is entirely possible that low doses of curcumin (the active ingredient in tumeric) could nicely complement our traditional therapies as a natural and safe treatment," Tortoriello wrote.
