Experts Express Misgivings About 'McDonald's Diet'

McDonald's may not have found its "Jared" after all.
In an announcement that evoked allusions to Jared Fogle's celebrated "Subway Diet," which led to a 240-lb. weight loss and subsequent advertising fame, a Virginia man named Chris Coleson recently revealed that he had dropped 80 lbs. in six months while eating exclusively at McDonald's.
Coleson, who limited himself to a cup of black coffee and two McDonald's meals per day during his self-designed diet, told news outlets including ABC News and CNN that he stayed away from the chain's most popular offerings (burgers and fries), opting instead for items such as grilled chicken sandwiches, snack wraps, walnut salads, and apple dippers without the caramel sauce.
Though McDonald's told ABC News, "We applaud [Coleson's] efforts and his results," others have been less than effusive in their praise. Dr. Christine Gerbstadt, a spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association, described Coleson's decision to limit himself to 1200 calories a day a "starvation diet."
In a release by the American Institute for Cancer Research, nutritionist Sarah Walley concurred. "Rapid weight loss like Mr. Colson experienced is inevitable when calorie intake is cut so drastically, regardless of what - or where - you are eating," Walley said. "But it doesn't lead to sustainable, long-term weight loss and it can be dangerous."
