HBO Series to Explore Herbal Weight Loss Industry

Academy Award-winning actor Forrest Whitaker has signed on to executive produce "Fat Sells," a new HBO drama series that will focus on the herbal weight loss industry.
"In a culture so obsessed with looks and weight, the idea of 'Fat Sells' - exploring image, self-esteem and power - was not only culturally important but very timely. It is a billion dollar industry that many people know nothing about," Whitaker told Celebrity News Service writer Jan Westmark.
Variety, the weekly trade tabloid of the entertainment industry, has reported that the hourlong series "will center on the head of a weight loss behemoth (and his family) and how his life starts to unravel when the FDA begins investigating the company's claims."
Dave Broome, who co-created the series with Gren Wells (a former executive producer on the reality competition show "The Biggest Loser"), told Variety that he was intrigued by the relative impunity with which herbal supplement manufacturers market their products.
"It's the magic pill theory," Broome said in a July 9 article on the tabloid's website. "As a society, we don't care what the side effects are to these pills. I thought it would be an interesting world to look into, the fact that it's a market unregulated by the FDA."
Both Celebrity News Service and Variety reported that the manufacture and sale of herbal weight loss products is a $46 billion industry in the United States.
