Is the Epidemic Ending? Researchers Note Plateau in Child Obesity Rate

Experts are expressing cautious optimism that there may finally be some good news about the state of childhood obesity in the United States.
After rising dramatically for more than two decades, the rates of overweight and obesity among American youth may have peaked at the end of the 1990s. An analysis of data that was collected on more than 8,000 youth during the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey found no significant change in the rates between 1999 and 2006. The study, which was led by Cynthia L. Ogden of the National Center for Health Statistics, was published in the May 28, 2008, edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
"After 25 years of extremely bad news about childhood obesity, this study provides at least a glimmer of hope," David Ludwig of Children's Hospital Boston told Bloomberg News.
The analysis of 8,156 youth ages 2 to 19 found that the rates of overweight and obesity among U.S. children had stayed the same for seven years, with 31.9 percent of American youth classified as overweight and 17.1 percent considered obese. This plateau followed 30 years of virtually continuous increases in the rates. For example, in 1974 only 4 percent of children ages 6 to 11 and 6 percent of youth ages 12 to 19 were overweight.
As the NCHS study did not attempt to determine the causes of the recent statistical stability, experts now expect to turn their attention toward finding out why the overweight and obesity rates have leveled off. Immediate hypotheses include the improved quality of school lunches and ongoing state and national awareness efforts.
But even though the analysis may raise more questions than it has answered, the possibility of good news related to childhood obesity is a welcome development. As Odgen told The New York Times, "It doesn't mean we've solved [the problem], but maybe there is some opportunity for some optimism here."
