Newer Neighborhoods May Increase Odds of Overweight, Obesity

A study conducted at the University of Utah has revealed that residents of neighborhoods that were built before 1950 weigh less, on average, than do individuals who live in more recently constructed areas.
The study, which is scheduled to be published in the September issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, found that an average man in a walkable neighborhood weighed 10 lbs. less than did a similar individual in a less-walkable area. For women, the weight differential was six lbs.
University researchers reached these conclusions after linking body mass index (BMI) information with geographical data for more than 450,000 residents of Salt Lake County.
The group determined that that older neighborhoods are more walkable - that is, more densely populated, more pedestrian-friendly, and more likely to contain a variety of destinations that can be reached on foot.
In a release posted on the University of Utah website, professor Ken Smith (who co-authored the study) said that the group's findings may have significant applications in efforts to improve quality of life as well as the continued health of the planet.
"We have the opportunity, using evidence-based data on community design, to create neighborhoods that encourage less car driving, benefiting residents' health and wallets and shrinking our own carbon footprint," Smith said. "The data show that how and where we live can greatly affect our health."
