Obese Women More Likely to Have ADHD

Canadian researchers have linked female obesity to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
Dr. J.P. Fleming and colleagues administered ADHD tests to 75 obese women whose average age was 40. Over 26 percent of them had ADHD, compared to 3 percent to 5 percent of the general population.
The research group, working at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, speculated that people with ADHD might have difficulty planning and preparing regular meals and keeping to exercise schedules. People with the disorder have trouble concentrating, organizing tasks, and controlling their impulses.
"It is well established that both adults and children with ADHD have very high rates of comorbid disorders including depression, anxiety, sleep disorders and substance abuse," the researchers wrote. "It is possible that in the same way that ADHD undermines the regulation of emotions, sleep, and moderate alcohol use, it may disrupt dietary regulation."
This study appears in the journal Eating and Weight Disorders.
