Red Wine Reduces Bad Effects of High Fat Diet

A study from the University of Wisconsin has found that an ingredient in red wine may blunt the effect of a high-fat diet, possibly answering a question that has puzzled scientists for years.
The question: How can the French enjoy high-fat foods such as Brie cheese and red meat dishes and yet not develop heart disease? The answer seems to lie in resveratrol, a chemical found naturally in grapes and pomegranates.
Researchers fed one group of rats a high-fat diet along with resveratrol. The second group ate a restricted calorie diet. The resveratrol protected the rats' hearts in a similar way that the low calorie diet did.
Small doses of resveratrol are a "robust intervention in the retardation of cardiac aging," according to lead author Professor Richard Weindruch, who wrote of his findings in the journal Plos ONE.
