Stomach Surgery for Weight Loss Raises Risk of Kidney Stones

People who have stomach surgery in order to lose weight increase their risk for kidney stones, according to a new study from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

Researchers compared urine samples from 19 people who had undergone gastric bypass surgery with a control group of 19 obese people who had not had such operations.
Half the people who have had surgery showed factors that lead to kidney stone formation.
The new study means that the majority of these patients are at risk for kidney stones, according to the UT study published in the Journal of Urology.
Since the kidney stones are not formed until years after their bypass surgery, many patients are unaware of the risk.

According to the American Society for Bariatric Surgery, about 20,000 such operations were performed in 1995 -- a number that had grown to more than 150,000 within 10 years. The average cost for the surgery -- which is not usually covered by insurance -- is about $30,000.
