Study Says Exercise When Young Can Cut Cancer Risk in Women

A six-year study of more than 60,000 women has led researchers to conclude that teen girls who exercise regularly can reduce their risk of developing breast cancer later in their lives.
Teams from Harvard University and the Washington University School of Medicine made this determination after evaluating data that had been collected on 64,777 women ages 24 to 42 during the Nurses Health Study II. The research group determined that the women who had engaged in regular vigorous exercise between the ages of 12 and 22 were 23 percent less likely to develop premenopausal breast cancer.
Dr. Graham Colditz, the study's lead investigator, told the ScienceDaily online magazine that the team's findings are "just one more reason to encourage young girls and women to exercise regularly."
The most active women in the study reported exercise that was equivalent to slightly more than three hours of weekly running, or about 13 hours of walking each week. Colditz's team believes the cancer-cutting benefit of exercise isn't associated with any one type of workout, but rather is a byproduct of regular, consistent activity.
"You don't have to be a marathon runner to get the risk-reducing benefits of exercise," Colditz said. "If we could get all adolescent and early adult women to be active with vigorous activity half an hour a day or walking two hours a day, we could prevent a quarter of all breast cancers before menopause."
Health professionals theorize that the cancer-cutting effects of physical activity are related to the fact that exercise reduces the production of estrogen, a hormone that has been associated with the development of breast cancer cells.
