Study Says New Anti-Obesity Drug Can Be Dangerous To Children

Researchers with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have found that a new type of anti-obesity drug may interfere with brain development in young children.
According to a May 8, 2008, article on the ScienceDaily website, a study at MIT's Picower Institute for Learning and Memory discovered that a new category of drugs that "trick" a person into feeling full by blocking brain receptors can also disrupt neural development if given to young children. The drugs work in adults by blocking receptors that bind to marijuana and other cannabinoids (some of which are naturally produced within the human body).
The MIT study, which was published in the May 8, 2008, issue of the journal Neuron, found that blocking similar receptors in the brains of young mice caused a failure of the rodent brains to properly adapt, change, and grow in response to stimuli and experience.
"Our finding of a profound disruption of cortical plasticity in juvenile mice suggests caution is advised in the use of such compounds in children," wrote Mark F. Bear, director of the Picower Institute and the lead author of the study, in a press release that was posted on the MIT website.
The drug category addressed by the MIT study includes rimonabant, which is produced and marketed by Sanofi-Aventis under the brand name Acomplia. Though legally sold in the European Union since 2006, Acomplia has not been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for sale in the United States.
