Teenagers who carry genes associated with obesity can remain slim if they exercise an hour a day, according to a new study from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden.
- Dr. Jonatan Ruiz and his colleagues studied 752 teenagers from ten European countries.
- Almost half the participants had one copy of a gene that results in a weight about 3.3 pounds above average. Fifteen percent had two copies of the gene, and 37 percent had none.
- The researchers tracked the teenagers' activity levels by having them wear special devices, and found that sedentary teenagers had higher body fat levels and carried more weight.
- However, teens that had copies of the gene but who exercised at least one hour a day were only 0.17 points higher for each copy compared to those without the gene.
- Exercise could be commonplace activities, such as walking or doing chores.
"These findings have important public health implications, and indicate that meeting the physical activity recommendations offset genetic predisposition to obesity associated with the gene variant and adolescents," said Dr. Ruiz.
The study appeared in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine.
