Two-Year Study Finds that Popular Diet Plans Produce Similar Results

An Israeli study has determined that three of the most popular diet plans produce relatively similar weight-loss results, but have differing effects on overall health.
Researchers with Ben Gurion University of the Negev evaluated the effects of the three diets (low-fat, Mediterranean-style, and low-carbohydrate/Atkins) on 322 moderately obese individuals over a two-year period. A July 16, 2008, article on the Reuters news service website reported the following findings:
- After two years, dieters lost an average of 7.3 lbs. on the low-fat regimen
- Individuals who followed the Mediterranean plan (which emphasizes olive oil and grains) lost an average of 10 lbs. over two years
- 24 months on a primarily vegetarian version of the low-carb/Aktins diet resulted in an average 12 lb. loss.
- More than 82 percent of the study participants were men, with an average starting weight of slightly more than 200 pounds.
Iris Shai, who led the study, told Reuters reporter Gene Emery that the results should be seen as encouraging by individuals who are attempting to shed unwanted pounds. "The good news is, we have alternatives," Shai said in a telephone interview with Emery. "If we fail in one strategy, we may want to choose another diet. We cannot think any more that one diet fits all."
A July 16 article on the Voice of America website noted that the health benefits varied according to both the diet and the dieter.
"High protein dieters, who were not calorie restricted, had a 20-percent reduction in their total cholesterol levels compared to a 12-percent reduction among low calorie dieters, whose plans included carbohydrates," wrote VOA reporter Jessica Berman. "Among diabetic participants, researchers found the Mediterranean diet did a better job in maintaining blood glucose levels."
Shai told Reuters that she hopes that health care providers will incorporate the study's findings into the advice they offer to their overweight patients, and that the study itself "will open clinical medicine to considering low-carb and Mediterranean diets as safe alternatives for patients."
