Naturopath Stanley Burroughs created the “Master Cleanser Diet” to rid the body of toxins, congestion, and joint problems caused by poor eating habits and bad mental attitudes. People who have tried it claim to lose weight very quickly, even as they increase their energy and sense of well-being. You get the full benefits of the diet by staying on it for 7-12 days at a time, three to four times per year. You need to drink laxative herbal teas in the morning and evening, along with at least six glasses of the lemonade formula per day. The Lemonade Diet lasts 10 days.
Every morning you begin by drinking a “Salt Water Flush” as follows: Add two level teaspoons non-iodized salt to one-quart spring or purified water. Throughout the day, you drink 10 servings or more of the Master Cleanser Lemonade plus the laxative tea mornings and evenings. You can buy the tea at any health food store.

Expert Review:
Yikes. This is not a safe, well-balanced diet. The salt water flush is extremely cathartic, so anyone brave (or crazy) enough to try this better plan on staying home for the week, close to a readily available bathroom. The overempasis on laxatives for such a long length of time could be extremely dangerous for some people.
I remember a friend who did this diet regularly throughout the year. She unfortunately died very young (in her 40s) due to cancer. She was a strong proponent of crazy fasting diets. When you are not eating you become weak and lack energy. Who knows how poor her immunity was from years of doing these terribly drastic, unhealthy diets?
Sample Menu:
We decided not to print the recipe here due to the high risks associated with this diet.
After you finish 10 days on the Lemonade Diet, you gradually return to regular eating. Here are menus for the first four days after your cleansing fast:
Day One:
Stay on liquids. Drink several glasses of orange juice along with herbal teas.
Day Two:
Same as Day One, except add a dinner of vegetarian vegetable soup and half of a rye wafer.
Day Three:
Drink orange juice for breakfast, vegetarian vegetable soup at lunch, and have a small dinner of vegetables, salad, and fruit.
Day Four: Ease back into regular foods, but omit coffee and milk products. Do not eat more than 1,500 calories per day.
