Overeaters Anonymous Diet

Description:

Overeaters Anonymous is a twelve-step program similar to Alcoholics Anonymous designed to help people overcome their “addiction” to food. The organization has tens of thousands of members of all ages, meeting in places all over the world. The program helps people end their compulsive eating by guiding them into a spiritual recovery through a “greater power.” Members have to go through the twelve steps, such as forgiving others, making amends to people they have hurt, and turning their lives over to “God, as you know Him to be.”

Anyone can attend meetings and there are no fees or dues. Each member has a sponsor, who guides him or her through the program and provides help when the new member slides back into old habits.

Overeaters Anonymous is not a weight loss plan. It does not provide members with any diets or other nutritional information. However, many members lose weight. For more information, see the OA website.

Expert Review:

Behavioral and emotional support rather than a specific weight loss plan. Many members will join another weight loss program to follow in conjunction with the 12-step work.

Sample Menu:

No specific diet is endorsed by Overeaters Anonymous. The HOW program, an offshoot of OA, does offer some diet advice, mainly in the form of a low-sugar, lean protein diet and strict adherence to meal times versus eating when you feel like it.
